Toiletry bags are small and functional, but capturing them in a visually striking way requires attention to detail, careful lighting, and strong composition. In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through how to photograph a toiletry bag using a Nikon Z7 camera, a 24-70mm lens, and a three-light setup of a Jinbei 1200W flash.
- Preparation: Styling the Scene
Clean and prepare the product
Wipe the toiletry bag to remove dust, fingerprints, or creases.
If it’s soft-edged, fill it with paper or soft material to help it hold its shape.
Props (optional)
Use minimal props to draw the viewer’s attention to the product. Items like razors, toothbrushes, or small perfume bottles can show off the size and functionality of the product.
Marbled or wood-textured surfaces can add a touch of elegance without being distracting.
- Camera Settings
Camera and Lenses
Nikon Z7: Excellent resolution to capture fine textures like leather or fabric stitching.
Nikon 24-70mm lens: Works well for both wide angles and close-ups. To minimize distortion, I usually use a focal length between 50mm and 70mm.
Settings (basic settings)
Aperture: f/8 for best depth and clarity
Shutter Speed: 1/125 sec (flash sync speed)
ISO: 64-100 for sharpest images, no noise at low iso
White Balance: Set to Flash or Custom for color accuracy
Tripod: Use a tripod for perfect framing and stability when shooting.
- Lighting setup: 3-light system
I used three Jinbei 1200W Speedlights for maximum control over shadows and highlights:
Key Light
Position: 45° to the left front of the bag
Modifier: Large softbox or parasol to soften shadows and show texture
Power: Start at 1/4 power and adjust to taste
Fill Light
Position: On the other side of the key, slightly higher or lower depending on the bag shape
Modifier: If you want less contrast, you can use a smaller softbox or reflector
Power: Lower than the key light (1/8 or 1/16), just enough to eliminate shadows
Backlight or rim light
Position: Slightly above and behind the bag, tilted to catch the edge
Purpose: Separation from the background
Modifier: Bare bulb or spotlight for precise control
Power: Adjust until you see a nice edge glow without glare
- Backgrounds and Surfaces
White or neutral backgrounds: clean e-commerce style
Textured backgrounds: for lifestyle or branded content, try bathroom tiles, wood, or fabric
Use black acrylic or reflective surfaces: add a modern feel and subtle reflections
- Shooting angles
Front-on: straight-on, showing symmetry and structure
45° angle: best for showing depth and side pockets
Top-down: for lying flat, especially when the bag is open and showing the contents
Close-ups: focus on details like zippers, stitching, and logos
- Post-processing tips
Remove dust and small imperfections

Use a tethered setup to see the results in real time on a larger screen.
Take a variety of shots: with the bag open or closed, at different angles, with or without props.
Consistency is key: for product lines, keep lighting and angles consistent across SKUs
